Zelda: The Known World by TheWhiteMaiden Zelda: The Known World by TheWhiteMaiden
Please feel free to download the full image; you won't be able to see all of the details (such as river and town names) otherwise.

I found myself unable to proceed confidently in my fanfic (The Last of Us) without a comprehensive map, so I ended up making one. It started out as just a personal sketch, then turned into a full on Tingle-tastic project. It took several weeks, mostly in research.

The placement of various landmarks are as game-true as I could get them; in fact, I marked and drew them over screenshots of the actual overworlds. I went through Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask taking screenshots and scaling each area, then fitting them together to create my references. Lots of work, but tons of fun!

The games that this map honours are: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link

Given that I scaled and drew over actual in-game maps, it should be assumed that any marked differences are intentional for the purposes of 1) Adjusting the area to fit the OoT-era, 2) Giving the world realistic space and dimension or 3) Connecting aspects of different games' maps.

Tell me what you think!

I used several brush sets, but unfortunately I cannot remember the names of all of them. If you see any that I used but didn't list, please send me word and I'll correct it immediately.

I've been trying to plan the best possible feasible trip, but I just can't do it. Too many places that you'd want to visit that are out of the way.
I'm just so entertained by this map...

I now have several trips drawn on this map. Now I just need to save up for the first trip(and for it to be a real place!)
And Happy HallowBirthday?

OH man this is awesome love it love it. My only... complaints?... would be things that I'm sure you've already thought of, those being that Termina is supposed to be a sort of alternate universe, right alongside Hyrule. That's why there are like doubles of everyone, it's just that Link travels through some sort of "wormhole" shall we say to get there. Secondly, the Great Sea is supposedly the vast expanse of water that covers the entirety of Hyrule after a lot of the games take place. But I completely understand what you're doing here and yes. Mind if I use it for my Zelda write? C:

There are theories that state that Termina is another land adjacent to Hyrule with people that are eerily similar by some kind of strange magic or just by coincidence. Since Link was traveling through the lost woods at the beginning of the game (Or was hinted in doing so) that few people ever travel to and from Hyrule and Termina. The forest prevents people from traveling through it after all. Who knows.

Ah, Termina. I am aware that it is supposed to be an alternate universe of sorts (or a Koholint-esque dream, in some theorists' view), but when I was planning out this map I was just too excited about the awesomeness of the landscape that I convinced myself a real Termina might exist parallel to the one shown in the game.

This reasoning being a ridiculous justification (lol) I no longer agree with my past self, and the new and improved map that I've been working on for the last year will not include it.

If Ninty hadn't been rushing development through and reusing the models from Ocarina of Time, maybe they wouldn't have had to write it off as an alternate universe and I could use Termina in my maps. But it is what it is and what it is is awesome nonetheless, so I can't complain. But anyway, I do agree with your assessment that Termina should not be there.

As for the Great Sea, well, I see no reason that it couldn't have been called the same thing before the Great Flood pre-Wind Waker. As of now, it's mostly just a reference for those who recognise it.

As for using my maps in Zelda fiction, I've been asked this before (and believe me, I am truly flattered) and my feelings unfortunately remain about the same, so I'll repost:

Not sure how I'd feel about someone else using this map for their fanfic. In most cases I'd say go ahead (with credit), but I'm reluctant for two reasons: first, there is a lot of content in this map that was invented by me and specifically for my own fanfic; and second, that fanfic hasn't been published yet except in unfinished excerpts. I'd hate to invent Luzmala and then be the second person to write about it.

But if you're willing to wait, when I publish my next map I will also publish a completely canon one that I won't mind people using (with credit.)

What is it that you're planning? :D

What I'm planning doesn't even reference a map, I just wanted to use the general positioning of the provinces that you have set up :)

It's sort of like a story that doesn't just exist in the Link/Zelda/Ganon timeline, it is the timeline. If you've ever read the book Wicked it might make a little sense, because he does a similar thing. I'm composing what I like to call a "chronological reasoning" which explains my theories on how present day Hyrule came to be, as opposed to the Hyrule in Skyward Sword or the Minish Cap. I have a lot of ideas planned out already, such as an evolution of the Picori into two separate species, the Kokiri and forest fairies, the only Kikwi left in existence evolving into the Great Deku Tree because of some witch's magic, and even the creation of the Great Fairy and Twilight/Dark Realms when Vaati captures the Triforce. I even explain the sort of alternate dimension where Termina is, but it all goes into such great detail I'd have to sit down and have an in-depth conversation.

Anyway this chronological reasoning will be used for my little story, where a sort of witch comes to Hyrule who was never meant to be there as part of Hyrule's timeline. It's very complicated, but I hope it'll work out in the end. :)

Ah, well, go ahead then! If you're just looking at where I've placed the canon locations from the series, then no problem.

I've never read Wicked, but I think I have an inkling of what you're saying. You mean to write a story that describes the whole history of Hyrule, as opposed to one that simply exists within it? My own story is a little bit of both.

I like the ideas you've come up with! I'd be fascinated to hear more. Is the witch Veran, by any chance, or an original character?

No, the witch is an original character, and although she's given the title "witch" she's not actually an antagonist.

The thing with my story is that it is even more than just a history of Hyrule, it's about how Hyrule doesn't exist without Link, Zelda, Ganon. The witch is there to explain this to Link, and it's not like "lawl jaykay you live in a video game!" They still don't live in a video game, so to speak, they just exist together, and without them Hyrule would be naught. I don't know if you'll be reading, so I don't want to give too much away, but it all comes into play eventually (at least I'll hope). I can send you a note with some of my chronological reasoning ideas, if you'd like. :)

The story exists within Hyrule and mentions the history, but also how Link is tied to the land, and that if he isn't resurrected, Hyrule will fall. Since there's no need for Hyrule without him.

Ooh, cool idea. So the world of Hyrule is sort of a construct within which the cycle continues? I'd love to hear more!

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you! I must have accidentally exed out the notice for your comment without realising what it was.

As far as locations being out of place, it's actually closer to the OoT map than you'd think. We're used to seeing the artist's rendition from the guide, but what I did was go through the whole game taking screen shots and measurements of each area map and then scaling and attaching them together.

As a long-time Zelda veteran, I have to say that this is one of the greatest creations that I have ever seen! AWESOME JOB!

Although I'm not sure where the names Luzmala, Zunal, Somaria, and Pacci came from. Did you make them up, or are they from Adventure of Link? Cause I don't remember too much about that game. It's one of the only two Zelda games that I've never beaten, the other being Four Swords Adventures (aside from the cdi and Tingle games, which I don't consider real Zedla games). The farthest I got was the battle against Barba at 11 years old. I was about to beat him when my cat got behind the dresser the Nintendo was sitting on and somehow unplugged it. I never even fully saved my game, I soon lost the cartridge, and haven't played it since. X(

Thank you! =D I'm glad you like it. I've been working on a reboot of this map for a few weeks now and it will have some more on it. The names Somaria and Pacci are taken from the items "Cane of Somaria" (LttP, OoA, FSA) and "Cane of Pacci" (MC). Zunal refers to the homeland of the Zuna, the green-skinned race seen in FSA. Luzmala is a name of my invention and is the homeland of the Garo from MM.

To understand why elements from the MC map aren't shown, you'd have to understand the game timeline that I use for my fanfics. In this timeline, the Four Swords story arc (MC - FS - FSA) and Majora's Mask take place in another dimension (the Sacred Realm, basically.) If you look at my Hylian Religion (Front) piece, you will see three rings of coloured jewels around the centre. These represent the three dimensions: The Sacred Realm (white), the Light World (yellow) and the Twilight Realm (purple) in between.

Hope that cleared some things up rather than created more confusion. Thank you for your interest!

Oh and, for the record, I've never been able to beat any of the handheld games. I am AWFUL at handhelds, just completely hopeless. So no shame there. You're ahead of most Zelda fans, anyway.

Wow, thanks for that. I completely forgot about the three canes. I also forgot about the Zuna as well. Luzmala was also a very creative name. And I kind of see where you're getting at about the Minish Cap. I also heard that you'd include the world of the Ocean King from Phantom Hourglass. Considering how many islands there are in the Great Sea between the Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, that's quite a bit of work (unless you're leaving out the islands from the Wind Waker, in which case never mind).
